Etching is mainly used for marking hard materials or for small jobs where the investment of a marking machine is too high. When etching, coding is applied by discolouring the metal. The discolouration occurs on account of the metal reacting with a liquid when an electrical current is applied. The marking head of the etching machine supplies the electrical current during the marking process.
