Tuinderij Vers checks packaging with Datalogic solution

Tuinderij Vers, a vegetable processing company in Brielle, cuts, mixes and packs fruit and vegetables into ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat products. In doing so, they attach great importance to food safety and hygiene. Ease of use and a fair price for consumers are also important criteria.

Some 400 committed and enthusiastic employees take care of production with modern machinery, making good agreements with raw material suppliers and arranging the in-house transport. In this way, they supply a range of ready-to-cook vegetables, vegetable mixes, salad mixes, crudités and ready-to-eat meal salads to wholesalers, supermarkets and food services in the customers’ preferred packaging.

Automation step in the control process
Within the food industry, you see an increasing amount of automated checking. Not surprisingly, a mistake can lead to (expensive) recalls and reputational damage. Tuinderij Vers has also built automated checks into its production process. A Datalogic Matrix barcode scanner checks whether the flowpack packaging has been given the correct sleeve.

The barcode of the sleeve to be used is scanned at the start of the production run using a Datalogic handheld scanner so that the scanner knows which barcode is arriving. The products are then packed in the flowpack packaging machine. The packaging then passes through a JASA sleever, and a cardboard sleeve is fitted around it. Immediately after application, the Datalogic Matrix barcode scanner checks whether the correct sleeve is around the product.
If the barcode is a ‘match', the packaging proceeds to the turntable; if the barcode is 'no match', the production run stops.
The video made at Tuinderij Vers shows exactly how this works.

Match code vs read-setting
This application uses the match code setting. This means that not only must there be a readable barcode, but the barcode being read must also be the correct barcode.
Another possibility is checking with the read setting. Then, it only checks whether the barcode is readable, no matter which barcode it is.
