How often do scribe and dot peen markers require maintenance?
If you buy a marker, you naturally want to know what costs you can expect in the future in addition to the purchase price. Therefore, a frequently asked question is how much maintenance our scratch and dot markers require. Frank Van Dyck, Sales Engineer at Automator, answers the question and provides insight into the costs to be expected during their service life.
Maintenance requirements of scribe and dot peen markers
“With average use, in which case I am talking about around 20-30 markers a day, it is advisable to clean the needle every 2 to 3 weeks. You do this by rubbing the needle with a cleaning cloth. Then a fresh drop of oil on it and you can use your marker again,” Frank explains. You don't need any tools for this, and it only takes a few minutes. “Even if you use the marker less often, I would still clean the needle every 2-3 weeks. If you use the marker more intensively, I recommend doing it weekly.”
Maintenance is easily performed on-site. No further maintenance is required from the supplier.
Very dusty working environment
“If you use the marker in an especially dusty working environment, it is advisable to take the needle out every time you service it. The hole where the needle is inserted can be cleaned by twisting a cloth inside or using a small screwdriver. That allows you to remove any dust residue in there,” advises Frank.
Replacing the needle
With the dot peen marker and scribe marker, a needle makes the mark on the object. How sensitive is the needle to wear and tear?
“How often you need to replace the needle depends on the impact force you use and the material you are marking. To give you an idea: aluminium is a relatively soft material. If you only mark aluminium, you can often get by with the same needle for 2 years. If you mark harder material, you may well need a new needle every six months,” Frank knows from experience.
A standard needle currently costs around 100 euros. A variant is available, especially for deep marking within the dot peen and scribe marker range. This variant has a thicker needle. This thicker needle is more expensive, at around 125 euros.
